4. Region (Chalten and trek at southern icefield):

In the Fitzroy national park, I wanted to chase a small dream of mine. I wanted to do a trek over the southern Patagonian icefield for a long time! When I arrived in chalten, I had to think about it for a while, because it was more expensive than I calculated. But then I decided to go for it, and it was absolutely worth it!! The tour took us 6 days, and we had a lot of luck with the weather!

The southern icefield is the biggest glacier field outside of the poles, 350 kms long and up to 80 kms wide! You'll need a lot of luck to have good weather, often it gets very uncomfortable with extreme winds and tons of precipation (up to 8000 mm per year)! But we had the luck to choose the right time slot! One of the highlights of the trip was the evening in the "circo de los altares". It was beyond words to see the back side of Fitzroy and Cerro Torre from the icefield!
